Mr. Angani is doing his doctoral studies in mechanical engineering in Korea away from his hometown India. He is trying to adapt to the foreign culture and pushing himself to achieve his goals and to move forward. We met him to hear his story.

Q : Can you introduce yourself?

A : My name is Amarnath Varma Angani and I am from India. I completed my bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering in India. Afterward, I came to South Korea and completed my master's in the Department of ICT Creative Engineering in BUFS and now I am doing my Ph.D. in the same department. This is my third year in Korea and in the year of 2020, I will complete my Ph.D. and go back to India.

Q : Are there any good things about Korea or similarities between India and Korea?

A : There are so many but the best thing is that Korea is a safe country. I can freely walk alone in the street, 24 hours a day. Also, words like mom and dad are pronounced the same in Korea and India. They are called 'eomma' and 'appa'.

Q : Are there any difficulties in Korea including those in BUFS?

A : When I want to go outside of the university, it is difficult to communicate with people. Especially, I have difficulties telling the taxi drivers where I want to go. Also, there are some of the cultural differences with India that are difficult to understand, but it is not a big problem. It is literally the difference between two separate countries, so I understand. In BUFS, foreigners like me face a lot of difficulties with the university website. The website is available in Korean and English, but the English version is not clear enough. It is hard to understand and use, so we struggle when using it.

Q : Do you miss your country?

A : I do sometimes. I do miss my family but my aim is important which is to become a researcher. Therefore, every time I feel homesick, I motivate myself by thinking of my future goals and then I overcome the homesickness.

Q : Is there any particular reason you came to Korea in spite of the fact that India is strong in IT?

A : India is the second most populous country in the world. This means that the competition for applying to a university is very high. If the admission gets full, I have to wait another year which is a long time. That is why I chose to go to a university in another country. As I completed my master's in Korea, this is a merit compared to a local degree because a degree from a foreign country earns a higher reputation.

Q : What are you studying and what do you do in BUFS?

A : I am a research student which means that I study and research at the same time. Every semester, I study three subjects and carry out a project. I work from 8:30 AM to 11:00 PM from Monday to Sunday. In my lab, different kinds of projects are conducted. Recently, we had the fish robot project, smart building project, etc.

Q : Do you have any difficulties doing two jobs at once?

A : Sometimes it is difficult but as there is a famous saying, 'No pain, no gain', without the challenges today, I will not gain something in the future. If you want to go for a bright future, you must do hard work. This is why I do not mind doing hard work right now. Also, I like the work I am doing.

Q : Do you have anything to say to the students in the university who are going the same way as you?

A : I see some people that do not care much about their future. Actually compared to the world, Korea is a hard-working country. It is shown by the fact that Korea has gained high economic growth in such a short period. Students who are coming to this university should do hard work to develop this country in the future.

Q : Do you have anything to say to foreign students coming to Korea?

A : First of all, Korea is a very good country. Secondly, Korea provides a huge funding for the students which gives them a good opportunity to study and work. I, too, got the opportunity to take part in different kinds of programs. Also, I highly recommend foreign students to come to Korea because they show great hospitality.
